Crates, Crawlies & Canggu Dumplings

June 28, 2015

If you do ever come to Bali, please check out the Crate Cafe. Gary has been following them on Instagram for some time and we were both excited to try it out. You will not be disappointed! The breakfasts here are out of this world and best of all SO cheap!

The cafe has a friendly yet unique vibe with photographs lining the walls of guests and friends who have experienced their fantastic food. There is a wall at the back where again, previous customers have written comments and expressed their love for the place. Crate regularly hosts breakfasts with local DJ’s performing which really gives this place it’s unique charm… Deffo a winner in our eyes!

Okay, back to food! Wow… for 45,000 idr (£2) you can try their brekkie plate which we both did and it was phenomenal. Again order a fruity smoothy to wash it down, I choose the ‘Go Fruit Y’Self’ with strawberry, pineapple and banana which starts you off nicely towards your 5 a day! The brekkie plate comes with avocado which is something I think I’ll need to get used to as it seems to come with everything these days… Everyone raves about the stuff but I’m undecided.

After sunset (which happens very early here at around 6pm) we carried on our tour of Canggu into the dusk and explored what the beach had on offer at night. Echo beach has some great bars to go to right by the sea and depending on what side of the beach you choose, will probably determine how crazy your night is gonna be.

It seems like there’s two distinct areas of the beach: a bustling party area with well-lit bars, loud music and crowds of people, then on the other side, bars and restaurants with a more chilled out ocean vibe perfect for lounging watching the waves whilst local chefs cook up a BBQ feast! There’s also some market stalls a little further up the beach where you can go eat some street food if you don’t fancy spending too much.

For dinner, we decided to try further afield and ended up at one of Canguu’s top restaurants, Japanese Restaurant AOBA. The restaurant is small yet has a warm and cosy setting with lanterns lining the entrance. They even had a photo area at the back with some traditional kimonos to try on if you fancied! Sadly I could not get Gary into a robe to take some pictures.

The food here was AMAZING! The dumplings are a must, try the garlic ones if you ever visit. I ordered the chicken teriyaki with rice and miso soup and Gary tried one of their speciality ramen noodle soups. The meal was perfect despite my absolute stupidity of touching the dumpling plate (after being warned of the heat of it) yet silly me still managed to scald two fingers and spent the remainder of the night feeling sorry for myself soaking my hand in a bowl of ice – Ouch!

Hopefully that will be the last of the injuries for me… although my clumsiness says otherwise!

After arriving back to the apartments, we were greeted by a little friend in our room. Now everyone knows gecko’s are a welcomed species in Asia as the little critters are harmless and feed on insects, including those pesky mosquitos. Unfortunately, one had made his way into the walls of our room and i’m not going to lie I was terrified!

What’s worse is there is no way you can catch them. Since this incident though, my phobia has slowly subsided and I am getting used to their appearances when you least expect it. Tip for people travelling… be prepared for creepy crawlies! I guess I will learn to adapt… fingers crossed.

Thanks for reading! Hope you guys are all enjoying keeping up to date with our shenanigans. Please feel free to leave comments or suggestions.

Lots of Love
