What A Wonderful Chaotic, Yet Splendid Adventure!

June 26, 2015

After sleeping in (again)… I hope the jet lag wears off soon… We set about looking for some breakfast. You really are spoilt for choice here and Bali knows how to do a proper breakfast!

We ended up at Canteen Cafe Bali which turned out to be a great little place set amongst the busy streets of Canguu. The decor was cool and really highlighted this areas love for surfing (they had surfboards pinned all along the roof).

Breakfast was amazing! I choose a home-made granola with tropical fruit, fresh yogurt and honey. It was delicious and healthy, certainly not a combination easy to come in the UK where our breakfasts tend to be anything fried in grease! The canteen has a wonderfully exotic menu and free wifi which makes it a popular spot with digital nomads who come to do a little morning business before hitting the surf in the afternoon.

The canteen has a great garden area too, a little hidden paradise that you wouldn’t see from the front – again a gorgeous setting if you choose to come just chill-out or get on with some work.

After breakfast we hopped back on our bike (getting gradually more confident with the roads) without a destination in mind and went off to explore. We ended up in the bustling district of Kuta. This place was crazy! Thousands of people everywhere, a maze of shopping and market streets with a glorious white sandy stretch parallel to luxury hotels and restaurants. We felt a world away from our little Canggu and you could certainly tell where the tourism was at!

Parking was relatively easy as many tend to abandon their bikes wherever they see fit but if you are looking for more security, parking lots at the beach are available for around 2000 IDR for the day. Thats around 9 pence so definitely worth it, although we did come back to find the parking attendant sitting sunning himself on our bike…

If you’re looking for a lively beach destination, Kuta is the one! Bear in mind you won’t get much relaxation time as you are constantly bombarded by locals selling all sorts – anything from fruit to elephant statues. The beach is heavily populated with an abundance of places to eat and drink. The shopping is incredible in Kuta and you are not short of choice. They have it all from colourful markets and beach side stalls, to luxury spas and designer boutiques. You will find anything here!

Top tips for Kuta:

  • Never accept the first price for anything, haggling is what the locals are expecting and you don’t want to be ripped off. It gets easier with more practice, kind of…
  • The beach is great if you are looking to be in the hustle and bustle, but remember Bali has so many other beaches close by to Kuta which are far more relaxing if that’s your ideal.
  • Watch your belongings – the markets are very busy and you can easily get lost in a sea of people.
